About Us
Leaving Things Better Than We Found Them
Regenerative Grazing
At Floating Stone Ranch, we follow a regenerative grazing approach that works with nature, not against it. By rotating our cattle through pastures and giving the land time to rest, we help grasses grow back stronger and build living soil from the roots up. We avoid tilling the soil, allowing natural root systems to remain intact, which helps retain moisture, prevent erosion, and store more carbon in the ground. It is a gentle, powerful way to care for the land while raising healthy animals.
Winter Bale Grazing
Our bale grazing system feeds both the cattle and the soil. In winter, we set out bales of hay directly on pasture, allowing cattle to graze where nutrients are most needed. The leftover organic matter becomes a natural fertilizer, enriching the soil and jumpstarting spring growth. It's a simple practice with significant benefits for animal and land health.
Bird and Wildlife Protection
Clean water and healthy ecosystems go hand in hand. Riparian zones are the rich, green areas that grow along the edges of streams, rivers, and wetlands. They help filter water, prevent erosion, and provide vital habitat for birds, fish, insects, and other wildlife. We protect these areas by fencing them off and using solar-powered pumps to bring fresh water to cattle at a safe distance. This thoughtful approach helps keep our waterways clean, supports wildlife, and strengthens the natural balance between our animals and the land.
Animal Welfare Feedlot Management
Our feedlot is built for care, always putting animal welfare first. We take the time to look after each animal as an individual, watching how they eat, move, and respond to their environment, then place them in the lot area which is best for them. Using high-energy forage grown on the ranch, we support healthy digestion and steady growth in a calm and comfortable setting. It is a thoughtful way to finish cattle that respects their wellbeing and produces tender, flavourful Beef you can feel good about.
Innovation Meets Tradition
At the heart of our operation is a belief that the old ways and the new can work together, each making the other stronger. Our on-site bioreactor captures manure and organic waste through biodigestion, turning it into renewable natural gas that powers homes and communities. We use rolled compacted cement in our feedlot pens to keep cattle clean and comfortable while making it easier to collect and direct manure into the energy system. This closed-loop approach reflects generations of wisdom on animal care and land use, now combined with forward-thinking technology that enables us to maximize the value of what we already have. It is innovation rooted in the real world, built to serve both today and tomorrow.
Proper Forestry Management
Floating Stone Ranch sits along the edge of Alberta’s northern boreal forest, where responsible land care means more than just grazing. We actively manage our forested areas to reduce wildfire risk by clearing deadfall, maintaining open fire breaks, and keeping forest edges healthy and resilient. These areas provide shelter for wildlife, protect our water sources, and support biodiversity, but they must also be managed with care. By walking the land, cleaning up windfall, and creating strategic buffers, we protect both our cattle and our community. This is where ranching meets stewardship, and where long-term thinking shapes every acre.
Beef Protein and Nutrition
Beef is a naturally nutrient-rich food that is essential to a balanced diet. It provides high- quality protein that supports muscle development, tissue repair, and overall strength, along with vital nutrients like iron, zinc, and B vitamins that help keep our bodies energized and resilient. These nutrients are essential for growing children, active adults, and older adults who need support for bone and muscle health. With every serving of Canadian beef, you are enjoying rich flavour and nourishing your body with the building blocks it needs to thrive.
